Chapter Eleven

Blistering cold, blinding sunshine, blustering winds. Aching muscles, acute fatigue, accumulating tension. Continually expecting some horrible, unforeseen event. Never knowing what Sven would demand of them next. Living in dread of more Gaptors arriving before they were fully prepared. Unsure of their endgame. Jaden wasn’t the only one who grew numb. He could see it in Kayla and Atu as well. They were all at the point where the only thing they could do was center their attention on what was right in front of them, putting all their energy into conquering that single specter utterly, not permitting their focus to waver for even a second. Then they turned to the next item demanding their attention. Jaden lost count of the number of days they spent with Sven, irrelevant anyway in light of the fact that time had no meaning when they were with their gliders.

Following their successful test flight of the hoods and aerolators, Sven had programmed the suits with various routines designed to train them in offensive aerial strategies. Each day, it was a new combination of movements. Each night, it was a reconstruction of the day’s exercises and how they could’ve improved. And when they improved, Sven acted on Taz’s earlier observations and added random flying objects, designed to come at them out of nowhere, their purpose to teach the teens how to maintain disciplined flying principles while being distracted. If this wasn’t enough, Sven added commands to the suits that taught the teens how best to handle their weapons whilst flying.

“We can’t have you chopping your gliders’ heads off because you forgot where your blade was or misjudged its length,” he joked.

Han and Taz weren’t amused. That was, until Sven’s programming saved them on more than one occasion, forcing the voyager careless enough to bring the blade too close, to flip the safety on. This retracted the blade before it did any harm; a failsafe reassuring the voyagers as much as their gliders.

Sven also insisted that they continue with their hand-to-hand combat practice and with the strength and fitness regimes he had implemented, despite their protests that these were things unlikely to be of use in a fight against a Gaptor.

“And how do you know that? What if your gliders are injured and this is the only way you can defend yourselves against that brute?” Sven barked.

“But Sven, the Gaptor’s about five times our size! And no doubt at least five times as strong. And have you seen his hide? Even a tank would have trouble blasting through that,” Jaden complained.

“You can never be too prepared,” Sven argued. “Would you rather you had no clue how to land a blow or avoid one?”

Jaden eventually gave up on arguing when it became obvious that Sven would not be persuaded otherwise.

Then there were the wake-up calls that came at all hours of the night, sometimes multiple times in a night. All part of Sven’s plan to shorten the time it took them to get battle-ready. It was exhausting.
